Tesla lowers the price of Full Self-Driving software

San Francisco: Tesla (TSLA.O), opens a new tab, has cut the price of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) driver assistance software to $8,000 from $12,000 in the United States, as CEO Elon Musk doubles his bet on self-driving technology .

Musk is betting the technology will become a cash cow for the world’s most valuable automaker. But he has failed to achieve the self-driving goal for years, as the technology has come under increasing scrutiny from regulators and the law.

Musk said earlier this month that Tesla will unveil its robotaxis on August 8, after Reuters reported that Tesla had scrapped its cheap mass-market car in favor of robotaxis.
According to Tesla’s website, customers can now pay $8,000 for the FSD feature, or subscribe to use it for $99 per month.

Tesla recently dropped the US monthly subscription price for the feature from $199, while every Tesla customer gets a free month’s subscription to the software.

Tesla has also cut prices for its car range in key markets. Struggling with declining sales and a growing price war for electric vehicles, Tesla cut prices by nearly $2,000 across its range in China, in line with price cuts in the United States.
