‘Bright smile and kind heart’ – Tribute to Shay Lynch (7) who died after tragic accident in Co Clare hotel pool

The boy was taken by ambulance from the Leisure Center at the Lakeside Hotel & Leisure Centre, which overlooks the picturesque towns of Ballina and Killaloe, on Saturday afternoon.

It is understood the boy had attended a birthday party at the hotel.

The child was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick where he was later pronounced dead.

In a statement, the boys’ school, Scoil Seanáin Naofa in Clonlara, said he will be “dearly missed”.

“Our school community has experienced the tragic death of our beloved student Shay Lynch,” the statement said.

“Shay is a much-loved first class student at Scoil Seanáin Naofa. His bright smile and kind heart endeared him to everyone in our school community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents Tania and James, his sister Abi, the extended family and his wide circle of friends.

“The offers of support are pouring in and are greatly appreciated.

“Our school has implemented our Critical Incident Management Plan. We are liaising with the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) to ensure that support structures are in place to help our school community cope with this tragedy.

“We would like to ask you to respect our privacy at this time. Thank you. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.” – Donnchadh Kelleher, Director.’

Taoiseach Simon Harris wrote on social media on Sunday: “Absolutely heartbreaking. I know people across Ireland are keeping this family and the community of Clonlara in Co Clare in their thoughts and prayers at such a sad and difficult time.”

In a statement, the hotel said: “Our deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and those who knew the young boy who passed away yesterday following a tragic accident in our swimming pool.

“We extend our sincere thanks to our lifeguards, team members and emergency services who did everything they could to respond to this incident.”

In response to questions, a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident at a swimming pool on a property in Killaloe, Co. Clare, shortly before 3pm on Saturday 20 April 2024.”

“A 7-year-old boy was transported from the scene to University Hospital Limerick where he was later pronounced deceased.”

“The local coroner has been notified and arrangements are being made for a post-mortem examination”

It is understood the boy was pulled unconscious from the water and desperate efforts were made to save his life at the pool.

Garda sources said they were treating the boy’s death as a “tragic accident”.

The swimming pool at the hotel’s leisure center was closed immediately.

Local people offered their condolences to the boy’s family.

One community member burst into tears and said: “God love them, it’s every parent’s worst nightmare.”
