Arsenal came back from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa 4-2 on Saturday, with Chido Obi-Martin killing the match by scoring the Gunners’ fourth in stoppage time.

It was a well-taken goal, with Obi-Martin racing in behind the defense before tapping a shot over the outstretched leg of the onrushing goalkeeper.

More notable, George Vogel reports that the forward has now scored more goals in a single season than any other Arsenal schoolboy at U18 level. Rhys Murphy was previously the record holder in the 2006/07 season.

A ‘schoolboy’ is a youth player who has not yet received a scholarship at the club.

That will happen this summer and Obi-Martin should then sign a professional contract when he turns 17 in November. But there are conflicting reports over whether Obi-Martin has yet committed to a stock market contract with Arsenal.

Bird reported in September that the striker has already agreed a scholarship with Arsenal for next season, but Very Nigerian football write that nothing has been signed yet.

According to ANS, Obi-Martin has been offered a scholarship and a professional contract by Arsenal, but he has yet to put pen to paper.

For now, Obi-Martin is concentrating on his football and needs a few more goals to become Arsenal’s record goalscorer in a single U18 league season.

The record currently stands at 25, set by Folarin Balogun in 2018/19, who was a year older than Obi-Martin is now.

Obi-Martin is at 21, with three games to go. Arsenal face Norwich City (A), Spurs (A) and Chelsea (H), but he has scored 17 goals in his last six games so it is not an insurmountable task.
