It’s not often that you get the chance to meet and spend time with a movie star, especially with a statuesque celebrity who has held handsome court above the Arroyo Seco for more than a century.

That will change for a few glorious weeks of spring at Potter’s Daniel Manor, an English Tudor Revival-style abode that serves as the 2024 Pasadena Showcase House of Design.

Billed as “one of the oldest, largest and most successful home and garden tours in the country,” the annual showcase raises money for various arts programs and activities, including “musical theater, orchestra, jazz ensembles, marching bands and choral groups.” at local schools.”

As with previous Pasadena Showcase Houses, different rooms feature different designs, with an imaginative array of designers giving every nook, cranny, corner and space a distinctive flair; premium materials, handcrafted furnishings, striking artwork and other beautiful details contribute to the flavor of each of the extensive rooms.

But the taste is not always formal, as you might expect when you first encounter the grand house, nicknamed ‘El Roble’, through its ornate gates; golden birds “fly” around the home’s airy entrance, a fairytale place with several imaginative odes to nature, and the lavishly realized dining room, which features a traditional table, a plush burgundy sofa and intimate tables for two.

A veranda decorated with countless birdcages, a library lounge and a curiosity room packed with games, books and a chess board filled with unusual pieces (think doorknobs and drawer knobs), and the romantic rooms, a bedroom full of nature, decorated with plants and butterflies, heightens the ethereal atmosphere of the tour.

It is an atmosphere that fits well with the country house; After all, El Roble has starred in films like “Foul Play” and small films like “Hitchcock,” further enhancing its fantasy-like nature.

The home’s real story has plenty of panache, too: Susanna Bransford Emery Holmes, nicknamed “The Silver Queen” (her husband found wealth in Utah’s Silver King Mines), gave the mansion its Tudor-like appearance from top to bottom. after she bought it in 1905.

After strolling through the lively decorated rooms of the house and also the guest house, make sure to take time to visit the shops and eateries; the cheerful scene that plays outside each Pasadena Showcase House is a big draw for returning fans.

The Pasadena Showcase House of Design 2024 is open daily from April 21 through May 19; Tickets are timed and start at $35.
