Last week, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida floated the idea of Colorado GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert becoming the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.

But at least tens of thousands of people on X want Gaetz to take the reins himself.

The idea of who the next leader of the House of Representatives will be is becoming increasingly prominent as pressure mounts on Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Johnson took over last year after Gaetz led the effort to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Gaetz, a Republican from Fort Walton Beach, insisted that McCarthy had broken the rules he helped establish to get the job.

But Johnson has backtracked from his conservative record in recent weeks, pandering to Democrats in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The latest example came on Saturday, when Johnson pushed through a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine, even though most Republicans opposed it. During the passage, the left-wing Democrats triumphantly waved the Ukrainian flag.

The measure passed even though Johnson had committed not to do so without legislation to increase the security of America’s southern border.

Before the vote, Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced a resolution to force Johnson to drop out of the election. Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie endorsed it. Senator Rand Paul also said Johnson should go after inaugurating the renewal of federal warrantless espionage provisions.

In his comments last week, Gaetz said he wasn’t ready to send Johnson packing because he feared it could negatively impact the GOP’s slim majority.

But, he told Newsweek, “we are not going to give up that responsibility, especially at a time when we see American interests being subjugated to foreign interests abroad.”

When reporters asked about Boebert’s acquisition, Gaetz responded: “Ms. Boebert could do better.”

Yet many say the same about Gaetz.

Journalist Simon Ateba sent the following to his 682,000 followers last week: “If you want Matt Gaetz (@mattgaetz) to be the new Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, just like this post.”

As of Sunday, more than 53,000 X users had liked Ateba’s post.

Among the responses, an X account called The Hole Tweet posted a survey of potential new speakers. The poll, viewed by more than 5,600 users, included Gaetz, Johnson, Massie and “Walmart Obama.”

Gaetz was the first choice, with 57%. Johnson was last, with just 13%.
