A car driven by a suspected drunk driver crashed into a boat club at a young child’s birthday party last weekend, killing the young brother and sister and injuring several others, some of whom were seriously injured.

On Saturday, at a child’s birthday party at a boat club in Newport, Michigan, a vehicle drove into the celebration, killing an eight-year-old girl and her five-year-old sibling and seriously injuring at least nine people. more, according to a news release shared on Facebook by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough, a 66-year-old woman drove 25 feet into the building at the Swan Creek Boat Club in Berlin Township, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Detroit, around 3 p.m., killing the two young men. children.

“The scene was described by first responders as extremely chaotic, with a high level of emotion among those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” Goodnough said.

Fifteen people were injured with “serious life-threatening injuries,” Goodnough said.

Two helicopters and ambulances carrying patients with potentially fatal injuries transported three children and six adults to nearby hospitals, Goodnough said.

Goodnough stated that the woman driving the car was taken into custody and was being held at the Monroe County Jail on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, but he did not provide the woman’s name.

He also stated that she was cooperating with authorities and would likely be charged with further crimes as the investigation continues.

According to Goodnough, authorities were told the woman may have visited a nearby bar prior to the event. They closed the business and planned to execute a search warrant there as part of their investigation.

About 30 miles south of Detroit on Lake Erie, the Swan Boat Club asked visitors not to come Saturday so emergency vehicles could pass. The club is closed until further notice.

“Please keep everyone included in your thoughts and prayers. We thank everyone for their concern and prayers,” the boat club said in a statement.

Diane Harrington, the aunt of the siblings who were killed, launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money and give the two children a “proper funeral and burial service.”
