GARY NEVILLE has told Mark Clattenburg to resign from his position at Nottingham Forest following the club’s “shameful” statement criticizing VAR.

Forest were left seething as they lost 2-0 at Everton, with the club adamant they were robbed of three penalties.

VAR chief Stuart Attwell backed referee Anthony Taylor’s decisions on the pitch for all three incidents.

And the result left Forest just one point above the drop zone, with Everton opening a five-point lead with a game in hand.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side then released a strongly worded statement on social media, inferring that the decisions went against them because Attwell was a Luton fan.

The Hatters are also battling relegation and are in the drop zone, one point behind Forest.

The statement read: “Three extremely poor decisions – three penalties not given – that we simply cannot accept.

“We warned the PGMOL before the match that the VAR is a Luton fan, but they have not changed it. Our patience has been tested several times. NFFC will now consider its options.”

However, Man Utd icon and Sky Sports pundit Neville hit out at Forest’s “stimulating” statement.

He believes the club made a big mistake with their wording.

And Neville has now called on ex-ref Clattenburg to leave Forest immediately.

The former Premier League official works as an advisor to the club, with Forest previously lashing out at referee decisions in other matches.

Neville said: ‘Mark Clattenberg must resign tonight.

“If he saw these words coming out questioning the integrity of a referee and claiming someone is a cheat for supporting another club, then he supports what is being said.

“He would lose all credibility with the referees in the game. He must resign tonight and distance himself from that statement.

“This statement is like a petulant child. It’s embarrassing.

“Today was a horrible day for Nottingham Forest. Possibly horrible for the decisions they made, but horrible for the way they responded to the situation.

“To mention the VAR official as a Luton fan and somehow infer that this had an impact on the decision-making process and to suggest to me as a fan thinking ‘has he cheated us’ is trespassing you are on really dangerous ground.

“I am disappointed for the players and fans of Nottingham Forest, but I am also disappointed for Nottingham Forest for the way they have acted.

“It’s a terrible tweet that they put out and they will regret it as a football club.”
