Boy, 7, who drowned in hotel pool remembered for ‘bright smile and kind heart’

The seven-year-old boy who drowned in a hotel swimming pool yesterday is being remembered for his “bright smile and kind heart”.

Shay Lynch, from Clonlara in Co Clare, got into trouble after attending a birthday party at the Lakeside Hotel & Leisure Center in Killaloe on Saturday.

In a statement earlier today, Shay’s school, Scoil Seanain Naofa, Clonlara, said: “Our school community has experienced the tragic death of our beloved student, Shay Lynch.

“His bright smile and kind heart endeared him to everyone in our school community. He will be greatly missed.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents Tania and James, his sister Abi, the extended family and his wide circle of friends.”

Taoiseach Simon Harris was among those to express his shock at the tragedy. He said: “Absolutely heartbreaking. I know people across Ireland are keeping this family and the community of Clonlara in Co Clare in their thoughts and prayers at such a sad and difficult time.”

It is understood Shay got into trouble in the swimming pool at the Lakeside Hotel & Leisure Center in nearby Killaloe on Saturday, April 30, shortly before 3pm.
