Russian forces claim progress near the key city of Khasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine

Russia’s Defense Ministry has announced the alleged capture of Bohdanivka, a village in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk province, saying units of the southern force have “completely liberated” the settlement. Bohdanivka is located in close proximity to the strategic city of Chasiv Yar.

Located just three kilometers from Chasiv Yar, Bohdanivka has recently become a focal point for Ukrainian forces seeking to maintain control of the city. Furthermore, the village is located west of Bakhmut, a city that saw significant conflict during the war and fell under Russian control last year after prolonged fighting.

The Russian victory in Bohdanivka coincides with developments in the United States, where the House of Representatives approved a substantial $61 billion aid package to Ukraine. The delay in passing this aid package, which must still be ratified by the Senate and signed into law by President Joe Biden, has reportedly contributed to setbacks for Ukraine’s armed forces, including shortages of armaments and ammunition on the battlefield.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine dates back to February 2022, when Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the invasion of Ukraine. Despite initial ambitions of quick victories and regime change in Kiev, the conflict has continued, with the focus shifting to eastern Ukraine over the past three years.

Khasiv Yar, currently defended by Ukrainian forces against Russian advances, has suffered extensive damage from the ongoing fighting, forcing much of the population to flee. As Russia claims control of Bohdanivka, the Ukrainian General Staff report on Sunday evening named the village as a place where Ukrainian forces repelled multiple enemy attacks. However, specific details were not provided.

Last week, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry refuted claims of Bohdanivka’s capture by Russia, acknowledging only partial control of Russian forces in certain parts of the village. Unofficial sources, supported by images from Bohdanivka and Chasiv Yar, suggest that the village is indeed under Russian control.

As the conflict continues and tensions escalate, developments in Bohdanivka and Khasiv Yar continue to shape the broader dynamics of the war in eastern Ukraine.
