Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bharadwaj on Sunday claimed that Tihar jail authorities have requested a diabetologist/endocrinologist from AIIMS for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. This comes a day after Tihar authorities submitted a report to the Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) stating that use of insulin was not indicated for Kejriwal.

Over the past week, a fresh set of allegations had come to light at the Rouse Avenue court after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleged that the CM was gorging on mangoes and consuming sugary tea in a deliberate attempt to gain sympathy from the court obtain bail. The AAP refuted the allegations, saying the 55-year-old Prime Minister had complained of elevated blood sugar levels and emphasized the need for insulin, which was denied by ED.

“On April 20, the Director General (Prisons) wrote to AIIMS, requesting posting of a diabetologist in Tihar. Kejriwal has been staying in Tihar for almost twenty days and only now are they asking for a diabetologist. On one hand, the Tihar government says they have medical facilities and on the other hand, they are writing to AIIMS asking for a diabetologist,” Bharadwaj said at a press conference organized at the party headquarters on Rouse Avenue.

The minister reiterated the party’s stand that a conspiracy was hatched by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the central government to “kill Kejriwal in jail.”

“Arvind Kejriwal has said that he needs insulin and that he should consult a doctor. He wanted to consult his private doctor via video call. On the other hand, BJP and Tihar Jail say he is fine and does not need insulin,” said Bharadwaj, Delhi’s health minister.

The report, a copy of which has been seen by HT, said Kejriwal was not taking insulin when he was arrested and taken to jail, adding that he had stopped taking insulin injections months before his arrest on March 21 .

The report, signed by the Director General (DG), Prisons, added that Kejriwal’s vital signs were monitored daily and the results were also attached. Taking into account all parameters and vital signs of the CM, his blood sugar levels since his stay in judicial custody were not alarming and administration of insulin was not necessary, the report said.

The AAP leader also posted a photo of a letter allegedly written by DG, Tihar Jail, to AIIMS and tweeted: “Expose! There was no diabetes specialist in the prison. After 20 days, a doctor from AIIMS was called yesterday. Arvind Kejriwal has been saying for so many days that I should go to a diabetes specialist and give me insulin. So far, the BJP government at the Center said there are specialists in jail; what are outside specialists needed for?”

Bharadwaj later released a copy of the letter to the journalists during the press conference.

Reacting to the AAP leader’s tweet, a senior Tihar government official said that appropriate senior specialists from AIIMS provided advice to Kejriwal through a video conference on Saturday. “Appropriate senior specialists from AIIMS provided advice to Arvind Kejriwal in jail through VC yesterday. After a detailed 40-minute consultation, Kejriwal was assured that there were no serious problems and advised to continue with the prescribed medications, which will be regularly reviewed and reviewed. The meeting was organized by the Tihar Jail Administration on the request of Sunita Kejriwal,” the official said XXX (where said, in a statement, tweet or to HT).

The official added that besides the senior specialist from AIIMS, the medical officer from Tihar was also present during the consultation. The senior specialist from AIIMS sought and received a complete overview of the CGM (Glucose Monitoring Sensor) and details about the diet and medicines Kejriwal was taking. Neither the issue of insulin was raised by Kejriwal nor did the doctors advise him to take insulin,” the official added.

Kerjwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case related to the Delhi government’s now-abolished excise policy. He has been in Tihar jail since April 1. On Friday, the Tihar Jail Administration submitted a report to Delhi LG VK Saxena, stating that the chief minister’s health has been assessed and it is “incorrect to say that Kejriwal has not been given insulin.”

Following reports that the CM was denied insulin in jail, the LG had asked the Director General (DG) of Prisons to submit a factual and comprehensive report on his health and medical records to him within 24 hours. The LG had also posted on social media that while ‘jails’ is an issue of the state government, no laxity will be tolerated regarding the CM’s health. Kejriwal was sent to judicial custody in Tihar Jail from ED custody on April 1.
