Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to plant over 15,000 saplings in the city during monsoon this year. The saplings will be planted through a private agency, which will also maintain them for the next three years. “We have decided to plant saplings of selected tree species such as peepal and banyan during the plantation drive. However, we will not plant saplings like Gulmohar,” NMC officials said. The saplings will be planted in six wards of the civic body. Nashik East, Nashik West, Satpur, Panchavati, Cidco and Nashik Road. Trees should be planted in open spaces, along the roadsides and in the gardens of the civic body. NMC has 538 small and large gardens spread over six divisions. 118 in Panchavati, 85 gardens in Nashik West, 86 in Cidco, 75 in Nashik East, 126 gardens in Nashik Road and 48 gardens in Satpur divisions. This year, the civic body has made a financial provision of Rs34 crore for the garden department in the budget for various works. The NMC has announced its plan to conduct a tree census in the city after the LS elections. The civic body has allocated a budget of Rs6 crore for the project. The previous tree census, conducted in 2016, recorded a total of 47.95 crore trees in the city. NMC garden department officials expect the upcoming census to reveal an increase of around 5 lakh trees since the last count.
