Concrete has never been cooler than in the Lavender Bay House on Sydney Harbour

Vaseline 2 months ago

Sydney is no stranger to palatial harborside mansions. But Lavender Bay House clearly stands above the rest thanks to its precast concrete exterior, which adds a brilliant touch of brutalism to the opulent neighborhood.

This carefully crafted home maximizes views of the Sydney Harbor Bridge and Opera House, ensuring every corner offers a perspective as breathtaking as the next.

From its vantage point in Lavender Bay, Sydney, the residence showcases a robust design that simultaneously contrasts and complements the natural beauty of its surroundings. The house has been carefully conceptualized by the architectural team at Tobias Partners to enhance an interplay of scale, light and materials, creating an unmistakable sense of peace and tranquility on the waterfront.

This home is located on a site that descends 16 meters from the street to the waterfront. This home required deep excavation to meet the owner’s exacting standards, while retaining the view corridors for the adjacent properties.

Despite its expansive multi-level layout, the house presents a modest single-story facade from street level, with the main entrance deliberately aligned to frame the northwest pylon of the Harbor Bridge.

Internally, a monumental concrete spine anchors the structure, connecting all five levels, while skylights illuminate the home with natural light deep into the main living areas. Lavender Bay House is laid out with private bedrooms along this central spine and open-plan living areas spread across the lower levels, before large floor-to-ceiling glass doors open out onto a lush garden, tranquil pool and direct access to the harbour. .

Lavender Bay House is designed for a family of five with additional guest accommodations and a dedicated home office. It is not only a private retreat, but also a testament to architectural excellence and timeless design.

The remarkable integration of form and function has earned the building successive shortlistings in the Houses Awards 2021 and 2022 for the Residential Design and New House Over 200m² categories, celebrating its exceptional contribution to contemporary residential architecture.
