RCMP say there is a large fire they are responding to near Regina Beach and are asking motorists to avoid the area.

At approximately 3:15 p.m., CST RCMP dispatched a report of a large fire in a rural area near the landfill in Regina Beach.

So far, the Regina Beach, Lumsden and Bethune fire departments are assisting.

Police are asking motorists to avoid going into the area south and southwest of Highway 54 for the time being, and the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline is advising motorists that fire and heavy smoke could occur, which could impact visibility.

Emergency services are also on site and some local roads are closed, according to police.

RCMP say anyone driving through smoke should slow down and make sure their headlights are activated.
