The Sentinel’s April 10 editorial, “As We See It,” titled “We’re Still Here. The world has not ended yet,” reminds me of the story about the man who fell from the top of a thirty-story building and as he passed each floor he could be heard saying, “So far, so good!” I also found it “curious” that the editorial appeared alongside a letter to the editor warning of the possibilities of nuclear annihilation as Western powers grow more desperate and the conflict in Ukraine escalates.

The Editorial rightly warns of catastrophes, but also suggests that Cassandra-like prophecies about the future should not be believed. After all, “the world has not ended. …yet.”

Perhaps the subtext of the editorial can be summarized as: ‘Don’t worry. To be happy.” Indeed, we should all celebrate and enjoy life, as it is likely the only thing we will have. But this does not mean we should pretend that there are no existential threats to all life. As long as our culture puts money more continues to find than life, that ‘… yet’ may be closer than we think.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 175 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter writers must include their full name, as well as an address and telephone number. We do not publish this information in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes.
