I had a huge roast dinner that I couldn’t finish in an ‘Instagrammable’ setting

If you plan to eat out, sometimes you get meager portions.

I often have the habit of making the same comment when I eat out, usually along the lines of ‘it would have been much tastier at home’. I’m a big fan of a roast dinner, but I’m also a big fan of big portions, and you don’t always get what you pay for.

I’ve seen quite a few TikToks about trendy restaurant ‘Botanico’ in Woolton Village, so I wanted to see if it was really worth the hype. I’d never visited Woolton before so I was surprised to see how picturesque and peaceful the area was – a perfect backdrop for a Sunday roast if you ask me.

Located in the former site of Il Ristorante by Crust at 3 Allerton Road, Botanico offers a full brunch menu, an evening bistro menu, pizza and a Sunday menu. Father and son team Donato and Antonio Cillo – the group behind Liverpool’s popular Italian area in the city center – opened the restaurant in October.

The team are also behind venues like Brunchin, Hey Farina, P&D Gran Caffe and Antonietta Cakes and Gelato in central Liverpool – so I was really excited to give it a try. As soon as I entered the restaurant, I was really impressed by the ‘Instagrammable’ interiors, from the leafy green foliage to the comfortable and trendy decor.

I loved the Instagrammable background

My friend and I ordered the Botanico roast and both chose the £17 pulled lamb as our choice of meat (other options included a chicken supreme at £18 or a five-spice cauliflower for £16). The roast comes with roast potatoes, braised red cabbage, sweet potato puree, carrots, tender broccoli, Yorkshire pudding and rich gravy.
