New Delhi: A week after a taxi driver was shot dead near the Red Fort, Delhi Police on Sunday arrested the prime suspect in the murder case after a brief exchange of fire, officials said.

The suspect, identified as Firoz, was previously involved in several cases of murder and robbery, they said. “A tip was received on Sunday about the whereabouts of Firoz. When the suspect was asked to surrender by a police team, he fired at the police party,” said MP Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North).

“During retaliatory fire by the police team, the suspect sustained injuries on his left leg. He was taken to Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital for medical attention,” the DCP said. On April 15, 36-year-old taxi driver Mohammad Sakib, a resident of Zakir Nagar, was admitted to hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds along with a beggar Luv Kush (15), a resident of Palwal. Sakib later succumbed to bullet injuries.

During the investigation, it was learned that his Maruti WagonR collided with an e-rickshaw at Chatta railway crossing around 12 noon. The e-rickshaw overturned, leading to an altercation between the taxi driver and the e-rickshaw driver. According to police, three people attacked the taxi driver and stole his mobile phone. When they tried to flee, Sakib caught one of them, shot him and fled.

Police arrested three people, including a woman, identified as Ruksar (28), Sajid (19) and Salman (24) on April 17. The DCP said suspect Firoz had previously been arrested in 10 criminal cases, including three for murder.

According to police, Firoz and his associate Firoz alias Fauzi were involved in the robbery and murder of Delhi police officer Shivraj Tomar, who was posted at Jafrabad police station in 2014.

“The suspect is a habitual perpetrator who did not hesitate to open fire to escape. His associate Fauzi was killed during an encounter with Delhi Police Special Cell,” the DCP said.
